The Fellowship is generally a one year position with the possibility of a second year by mutual agreement.


Location: The current Fellowship available is for the Midwest. The chosen applicant will work remotely in their choice of the following regions: St. Louis, MO, Minneapolis, MN, or Cleveland, OH. Other Midwest locations may be considered.


Job Description:


This position of Fellow will focus on raising awareness about social and environmental issues related to the food system at accounts in his/her region. Fellowships are intended as an opportunity for recent college graduates of campuses that are served by Bon Appetit. This position looks for candidates that have prior experience and are active in sustainability issues during their time on campus and want to share knowledge of agricultural issues and the subject of sustainability in the food service industry.


The position will serve as a resource to Bon Appetit chefs, managers and guests interested in understanding or strengthening sustainability-related programs and/or launching new initiatives in their cafes. The individual will engage creatively with communities where Bon Appetit cafes are set up; generating interest in food and sustainability challenges and communicating Bon Appetit policies through farm visits, guest lectures, educational events and assistance with the implementation of sustainability-related programs.


Between campus visits, Fellows perform research to inform innovative programs that will maintain the company’s position as a leader in sustainability. The projects for this position are constantly changing with focus that includes focus on reducing food waste, defining fair farm labor, creating a network of student gardeners and farmers at colleges around the country, providing support and resources to students interested in running the Real Food Calculator, and starting food recovery programs.

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Public Health, Communications or related area or 4-6 years combination of relevant education and experience required.

  • A strong track record of interest and experience working on sustainable food and agriculture issues;

  • Knowledge of public health, environmental and social issues related to food and agriculture;

  • Past attendance at a college or university where Bon Appetit managed the food;

  • Strong organizational skills with great attention to detail and ability to manage multiple and competing priorities;

  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills, including comfort speaking publicly and with the media;

  • Self-starter with ability to work independently and collaboratively;

  • Ability to think critically and to effectively deal with unique challenges as they arise;

  • Ability to spend up to 80% of time traveling and work independently and from home when not traveling; flexible schedule to include occasional evenings and weekends; and

  • Familiarity with the food service or restaurant industry preferred.
